Creating Privacy and Outdoor Living in Groton, MA

Not every outdoor living project needs to be expansive to make a lasting impact.

We recently completed this backyard patio and landscape installation in Groton, Massachusetts, transforming what was once a typical builder-grade backyard into a private and inviting outdoor retreat. Like many newer neighborhoods, the original construction left the property with very few mature trees and little separation from neighboring homes. Our goal was to create a space that felt established, natural, and connected to the landscape.

The centerpiece of this project is a custom fire pit patio constructed from locally sourced Mason granite planks measuring approximately 2.5 feet by 10 feet. The large-format granite creates a clean, timeless look while showcasing the natural beauty of one of New England's most iconic building materials. Positioned just off the main deck, the patio provides the perfect place for gathering around the fire on cool evenings.

To help establish privacy and soften the surrounding landscape, we introduced four carefully selected trees throughout the backyard. Two October Glory maples were planted along the property line to create future screening and brilliant fall color. A Green Giant arborvitae provides year-round evergreen structure, while a mature Emperor I Japanese maple adds a stunning focal point beside the patio.

The new trees are complemented by a lush perennial planting palette designed to bring seasonal interest, texture, and color throughout the growing season. To ensure long-term success, we installed a dedicated drip irrigation system for the landscape beds and completed significant repairs to the existing lawn irrigation system.

The result is much more than a new patio. It's an outdoor space that feels comfortable, private, and established, a backyard that invites people to slow down, gather around the fire, and enjoy being outside. As our clients described it, this project creates a feeling. It gives off a vibe that simply can't be achieved with a patio alone.

At Roots & Rocks, we believe the best outdoor spaces combine natural materials, thoughtful planting design, and craftsmanship to create landscapes that feel as though they've always belonged.
